![]() Though these bombs might be thought of as "bunker busters" today, in fact the original "earthquake" theory was more complex and subtle than simply penetrating a hardened surface. ![]() They had casings of high grade steel, much stronger than the typical World War II bomb so that they would survive hitting a hardened surface, or penetrate deep into the ground. Using the same principle as a spinning top, this enabled them to resist being deflected, thereby improving accuracy. The tails were designed with offset fins causing the bombs to spin as they fell. The designs were very aerodynamic, allowing them to exceed the speed of sound as they fell from 22,000 ft (6,700 m). These were "Earthquake" bombs-a concept he had first proposed in 1939. In World War II, the British designer Barnes Wallis, already famous for inventing the bouncing bomb, designed two bombs that would become the conceptual predecessors of modern bunker busters: the five tonne Tallboy and the ten tonne Grand Slam. Röchling shells were bunker-busting artillery shells, developed by the German engineer August Cönders, based on the theory of increasing sectional density to improve penetration. We have intuitions, and the usual intuition is that the Cuban Missile Crisis is the closest we’ve ever come. We don’t know what the probability of nuclear war is at any particular moment. Speaking about Vladimir Putin’s nuclear threats, President Biden said at a private fundraiser on Thursday night, “We have not faced the prospect of Armageddon since Kennedy and the Cuban Missile Crisis.” Do you think that was an appropriate comparison? I spoke with Edward Geist, a policy researcher at the RAND Corporation, about why a Russian nuclear strike could cause even more damage than intended, whether Putin’s strike orders could be ignored, and how the U.S. Though experts largely believe the chances are low that Putin will follow through on that threat, the mere possibility has rattled western leaders. In a menacing speech last week, Putin claimed that he would use “all the forces and means at our disposal” to defend areas of Ukraine he had illegally annexed and that he was not bluffing. With his forces continuing to struggle in Ukraine, Russian president Vladimir Putin has begun regularly invoking his country’s massive arsenal of nukes in what many view as a sign of desperation. Suddenly, talk of nuclear apocalypse is in the air for the first time in decades. It would be just like Stranger of Paradise to make reference to a past Final Fantasy game through the collaborator's identity. In those games, Cid plays the role of silent observer, but his role in the endless wars cannot be understated. It's worth noting that Cid of the Lufaine plays a similar role to the extraplanar collaborator in Dissidia, where he is responsible for the creation of Cosmos and Chaos, who bear a close resemblance to light and darkness, respectively. This isn't to say that Cid couldn't simply be an unknown Lufenian from the past or even not a Lufenian at all. The biggest drawback to this theory is that the extraplanar collaborator is unlikely to be a Lufenian themselves, as they are hinted to be a total unknown to the Lufenians writing the logs. His motive for acquiring the energy could be to power some greater project - something tackled in a DLC, perhaps. While his identity as one of Final Fantasy's Cids is a detailed added to the game's remakes and ports, it does make Stranger of Paradise's lack of any Cid all the more striking.Ĭonsidering his technological expertise, it's not out of the realm of possibility for this game's Cid to be the one to discover the means for time travel and the Lufenian's resets. We’re certain that more developers and publishers will be joining the Epic Games Store bandwagon in the future, too.In the original game, Cid of the Lufaine is a posthumous character responsible for constructing the airship, the ultimate method of transportation for the party. Now, we don’t know what Epic Games is doing to receive exclusivity from so many renowned developers and publishers but whatever it’s doing, it’s definitely working.
